ACCUPLACER/ESL
The ACT ended the Compass test in 2016. Most Georgia institutions, including Technical College System of Georgia institutions, have decided to replace Compass with ACCUPLACER.
ACCUPLACER is an assessment test used by the Technical College System of Georgia to test applicants for program readiness.
What is the ACCUPLACER?
The ACCUPLACER is designed to assess your knowledge in math, reading and writing. There are also English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) tests in Language Use, Listening, Reading Skills and Sentence Meaning. These tests help to identify both strengths and improvement areas in each subject.
It gives you and the colleges you are interested in a sense of how you’ll be able to apply the thinking, writing and study skills required for college coursework.
Who needs to take the ACCUPLACER?
These tests are primarily for students interested in attending the Technical College System of Georgia. However, some four-year and research institutions may ask you to complete one of these tests to identify skill level in major subject areas in order to place you in the best courses for your skill level.
How do I sign up to take the ACCUPLACER?
Most institutions give these tests during orientation to incoming freshmen who have already applied and been admitted to the school. Some institutions may require you to take one or more of these tests before enrolling in a particular program or course. Talk to your adviser, counselor or Office of Student Services at the institution you are going to attend to determine which test you need to take.
