Service Commitment, Repayment and Verification Obligation
If you are one of the 42 high school seniors selected for the award each year, you will agree to enlist in the Georgia Army National Guard, become a cadet in the Boar’s Head Brigade at UNG, and work toward a bachelor’s degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Guard following graduation.
Service Commitment
When you enlist in the Guard, you incur a six-year commitment to serve as a soldier. You will serve your first four years in the Corps of Cadets at the University of North Georgia. You will not be alone because more than 200 of your fellow cadets at UNG are also soldiers in the Guard.
Your six year enlistment will end after four years if you are approved by the UNG professor of military science to commission as a lieutenant upon graduating with your bachelor’s degree. You will then serve at least four years as a part-time officer in the Georgia Army Guard, which ends your scholarship service obligation. After that:
- You may serve four more years in the active Guard of any state (weekend and other training), then opt leave the Guard or stay in until you decide to depart or retire.
- You may serve two years in the active Guard, followed by two years in the Individual Ready Reserve.
- You may apply to transition into the regular Army.
Scholarship Repayment
Recipients must serve for the number of years, based on their scholarship award, in the Georgia Army National Guard after graduating from UNG.
If the recipient does not fulfill the service obligation, he or she must repay the total amount received, plus interest, within five years.
